Our History

Our school opened in 1983 with one teacher and one student at the kitchen table of our founder, Lucinda Low.

We have now grown to two campuses in Dartmouth and Truro, and work with more than 100 students in our day school program.

We have also expanded our services to the general population through our Turning Tides Community Outreach programs.
Our Dartmouth Campus
Our Dartmouth Campus was established in September 1987 in a house on Hawthorne Street.

Within a year, our school moved into a large house at 94 Crichton Avenue, where we remained for many years.  Staff remember the location fondly for it's many quirks - small bedrooms used as classrooms, offices in the basement, and a computer room housed in a closet.  Teachers even rang a hand bell to signal an end to recess and lunch!

We made this property work for us for many years, but demand for our programs meant we eventually had to find a new location.  We moved into our current school at 3 Valleyford Ave. in Dartmouth in 2003.  This former public school has big, bright classrooms, a small gym and lots of outdoor space.
Our Truro Campus
Bridgeway Academy first opened in the basement of St. David's United Church on Pictou Road in Bible Hill in 2008.  The student population quickly doubled, and the search was on for a new location.

The school's next home was in a former retail space in North River, which we moved into in early 2009.  Again, our growing student population meant we had to look for a new location just a little more than a year later.

In October 2010, we moved into our current location on Douglas Street in Truro.  Our school's new home is in the former Douglas Street School, which is now the Douglas Street Recreation Centre.  We enjoy large classrooms, lots of green space and access to a full-sized gym.
